What's the purpose of this?
I receive a lot of messages every day. Even though I like engaging with viewers, I try to preserve my time and energy outside of social media while balancing a full-time job and other responsibilities. As a result, I hardly check DM requests. Before you send me a message, check if your question has already been answered here. Thanks!
Can you promote my book or product?
I am open to paid partnerships to promote a book or product on YouTube or Instagram. Note that for books, I will not recommend or review your work, only give awareness to it by giving the synopsis and cover. Email me at [email protected] for rates. If you have a conservative budget, please be realistic before contacting and consider working with someone else.
Can you share my channel, post, organization, etc?
Unfortunately no. I get a lot of requests to promote other people's stuff and I don't want to set a precedent for saying "yes" to everything.
Can you review my book or give feedback?
I will not review your book.
Can you read [other author's book]?
I do not read books by request, but you can leave book suggestions in my YouTube comments.
Have you read [book suggestion]?
You can see which books I have or have not read on my Goodreads by using the search filter.
Can you recommend me books?
You can see which books I have rated highly on Goodreads or watch my monthly wrapup videos. I also make videos of the best books I read every year at the end of December.
How can I add captions for your videos?
All of my videos have English and Spanish captions, but if you would like to help contribute subtitles for other languages, that would be wonderful! Send an SRT file to [email protected], and I will upload them. You can google how to format SRT files if you aren't familiar!
Can I send you stuff in the mail?
I don't have a P.O. box, but I have an Amazon wishlist.
Since you work at Twitter, can you fix this issue for me or help me get a job?
No, my job has nothing to do with customer service or hiring.
How do you make your videos (camera, editing, etc)?
I currently film with the Sony A6400. Before that I used to film on my Pixel 3 phone. I use natural lighting and edit on iMovie. I make my thumbnails on Photoshop and use the Futura font most of the time. I find music through my Spotify recommendations and check if the music is copyrighted by looking up the song on YouTube, because those videos will display the music license at the bottom of the description if it is copyrighted. I also upload my videos as private in advance to give time for the algorithm to detect any copyrighted songs.
How do I read more or get out of a reading slump?
Pick up short, easy-to-read books or an audiobook with a great narrator. I started getting into the habit of reading because I listened to the audiobooks for The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, which has a great voice actress and a simple storyline to follow. I also used to read for an hour in bed before I go to sleep as my nightly routine to wind down, but now I get my reading done during my commute. After a while it becomes a habit and will come naturally.
What advice do you have for starting out on booktube?
Donβt worry about buying books if that stresses you out, just get them from the library if you can. You don't need to invest in any camera or equipment, especially if you're just starting out and don't know if you will commit to it. Start off with a phone and free editing software, then see if you are interested in upgrading if you keep doing it. Don't worry about other people finding your channel because as long as you don't use your full name, no one can find a channel that's just starting out. If you want people to watch your videos or make friends, comment regularly on other people's videos. My closest friends on youtube comprise mostly of small booktubers that I became friends with from us commenting on each other's videos or tweets. Most importantly, make sure you're not relying your happiness or worth on youtube and have a well-rounded life outside of the internet, otherwise you're gonna get mad over trivial shit that doesn't matter lol.
How did you become an art director? What do you do exactly? What career advice do you have?
I majored in graphic design in college, got my first full-time job as a designer at a digital ad agency, and then got promoted to art director. As an art director I focus on concepting and designing ideas for digital product and brand campaigns, and make sure they are rooted in storytelling and will engage with an audience. My career trajectory is an anomaly and it's OK if you don't have everything figured out yet. My advice for designers is that having a good portfolio is key. Look at other designers' portfolios to get an idea of the quality of work you want to have. Create side projects for yourself, even if it's making up an imaginary brand or campaign, so that you can learn through practice, explore your interests, and experiment.
What if I still have questions or just want to send a message?
Leave a YouTube comment. I may not be able to answer all of them if they are repetitive questions or I have limited time. Note that I rarely ever check my inbox on Twitter and Instagram because I receive too many messages and find social media to be very draining, but I try to check comments frequently!
Thank you in advance for any kind messages - I really appreciate them and am keeping a folder of nice/sweet messages I receive because it helps me stay positive. <3
